In capillary bleeding, there is relatively little blood loss. Such bleeding can be stopped quickly by putting clean gauze over the bleeding area. A layer of absorbent cotton is placed over the gauze and the wound is tied up. If no gauze or bandage is available, the bleeding area can be tied with a clean handkerchief. Do not put a shaggy cloth directly on the wound, as it has a large number of bacteria on its lint, which will cause the wound to become infected. For the same reason, absorbent cotton should not be placed directly on an open wound.
